Greek and Turkish Cypriot parties have discussed the establishment of an institution for peacebuilding and conflict resolution in a meeting at Ledra Palace on Wednesday.
The institution could be established under the UN, with the attending parties suggesting that Cyprus be rebranded as a hub for peace and international dialogue, shifting its image from a “problem” to a symbol of “peace”.
The proposal, originally introduced in 2018 by former Akel-MP and European Parliament member Takis Hadjigeorgiou as “An idea for Cyprus and the region,” has gained traction with the centre-right Diko party.
By adopting the idea, Diko signals a potential boost for the initiative, which aims to enhance bicommunal security and ensure its longevity after a solution.
As Hadjigeorgiou’s vision gains momentum, Diko is positioning itself as a key player, though its specific role remains uncertain. A subcommittee will soon review the proposal in more detail. Diko did not respond to the Cyprus Mail’s request for further comment on Wednesday.
In the view of the upcoming enlarged meeting on Cyprus in Geneva, from March 17 until March 18, the attending parties called for a constructive dialogue and the resumption of negotiations for the resolution of the Cyprus problem. The discussion was supervised by the Slovak embassy.
The next meeting of political party leaders and representatives will take place on March 26, with the Turkish Cypriot Democratic Party (DP) as the host party.
